Pinion Gearbox for your touring bike or gravel bike. The Pinion gearbox was developed in Germany in 2012 by Michael Smitz and Christoph Lermen, both of whom worked in the transmission department of the car manufacturer Porsche. The concept behind the gearbox is similar to a car's gearbox, where the gears are positioned stably in the center of the bike near the bottom bracket, while competitor Rohloff mounts the gears in the rear hub.

Initially, the Gearbox was only available with 18 gears. Later, versions with 9 or 12 gears were added, which are also very suitable for installation in an e-bike.

If you want low maintenance, we recommend combining the Gearbox with the maintenance-friendly Gates belt drive.

GEARBOX MADE IN GERMANY

Because a Pinion gearbox is centrally located in the bike's center, it provides stable handling under all conditions. A gearbox is also quieter than a Rohloff hub, and the Hope rear hub rotates even more smoothly when coasting. However, the gearbox is on average 1 kilogram heavier than a Rohloff hub.

Like its competitor Rohloff, the Pinion Gearbox is produced in Germany. Gearbox production is still largely traditional and handcrafted.

Pinion offers a P-line with a CNC-milled housing and 18 gears, available in several colors. There's also a C-line with 9 or 12 gears and a magnesium housing. The C-line is ideal for e-bikes and is only available in black.

The Pinion P1.18 Gearbox has a range of 636% and increments of 11.5% per gear, meaning the heaviest gear is 6.36 times heavier than the lowest gear. This makes the bike ideal for use in both hilly and flat conditions. For comparison: a 30-speed derailleur system has a range of 573%.

The Pinion C1.12 Gearbox has a range of 600% and increments of 17.7% per gear. Finally, we also install the Pinion C1.9XR Gearbox with a range of 568% and increments of 24.4% per gear.

The great thing about the Pinion Gearbox is that all steps between the gears are the same and there are no overlapping gears as with a derailleur system.

At Jongerius you can also choose the desired gear ratio to have more lighter gears for the mountains or more gears on the heavy side for use in the flat Netherlands.

EASY SWITCHING WITH THE TURN SHIFTER

The Pinion Gearbox is controlled via a rotary shifter on the handlebar, allowing you to easily shift gears both while riding and stationary. You can shift multiple gears simultaneously.

The steps in the Gearbox are incorporated in the gearbox itself and are operated with two cables that run to the rotary shifter.

Unlike a derailleur, you can shift through all gears and you don't have to worry about your chainline because it is the same for all gears.

NEW PINION SMART SHIFT ELECTRIC GEARSHIFT

Jongerius bikes are now available with the new Pinion Smart Shift as an option. With the Smart Shift, you shift electrically, and the bike is equipped with a small battery that provides the power. This battery only needs to be charged once every 20,000 shifts.

The Pinion Smart shift C1.12i has 12 gears and a range of 600%, with the system starting in a starting gear of your choice.

THE PINION te1 TRIGGER SHIFTER

Switching with Smartshift is lightning fast with the Pinion TE1 trigger push buttons.

If desired, the system can also shift down to a lighter (self-selected) gear so that you can easily cycle away from a standstill.

The Smartshift can also automatically shift to a cadence you select via the Smartshift app. The Smartshift gearbox then shifts when you're not pedaling, ensuring a smooth shifting experience.

ALSO FOR GRAVEL BIKES WITH THE TRP HYWIRE DROPBAR SHIFTER

In combination with the new TRP Hywire drop bar shifters for Smartshift, we can also equip a bicycle with drop bar or gravel handlebars with the Pinion Smartshift electric shifting.

Switching then takes place super-fast electrically via buttons on the side of the Trp shifters specially developed for Smartshift.

Connection with the Pinion Smartshift app

A Pinion Smartshift app is available for Android and iPhone. This app allows you to control your preferred starting gear and whether you want to shift manually or (semi-)automatically.

You can also see the battery level of your Smartshift battery via the app if it has an external battery and you can perform software updates via the app.

MAINTENANCE AND WARRANTY OF A PINION GEARBOX

If the gearbox is new, you'll need to break it in and change the oil for the first time after 1,200-2,000 km. After that, it should be changed every 10,000 kilometers.

We also recommend replacing the gear cables every 20,000 kilometers. The gearbox is otherwise maintenance-free.

The warranty on a Pinion P-line gearbox is 5 years and the warranty on a C-line gearbox is 2 years. (or 3 years after online registration).

If you pay for the warranty at the end of the warranty period, Pinion Care have it done via Pinion, then extend the warranty by 2 years.

At the end of your warranty period, you can have a paid repair Pinion Care+ perform then extend the warranty by 5 years.

Pinion also has its own service center, so if anything goes wrong with your Gearbox, the experts in Germany are ready to service your Gearbox and get you back on the road quickly.

At the Pinion Care Service Center You can also come to us (for a fee) for repairs to your Gearbox after the statutory warranty period has expired.

The Pinion Gearbox can be combined with the (also German) Z20 rear-wheel motor from Albert Neodrives. The combination of the Pinion Gearbox and a Neodrives rear-wheel motor provides very smooth assistance. The great thing about this combination is that you can also cycle perfectly with the motor turned off.

The Alber Neodrives Z20 motor is a very powerful and especially quiet motor, which we combine as standard with a 625 Wh intube battery. The key features of the Neodrives motor are: 40 Nm of torque, a maximum power output of 500 watts, and acceleration from 0 to 100% in just 3 seconds! You can also benefit from energy recovery when descending in hilly terrain.
