Rohloff hub with 14 gears

In 1998, Barbara and Bernard Rohloff launched the Rohloff 14-speed hub in Germany. This hub is low-maintenance and easy to operate (both while riding and stationary). In its 25 years of existence, the Rohloff hub has remained virtually unchanged, although for a few years now, Rohloff has offered the option of choosing your favorite color.

Rohloff has sold over 350,000 hubs over the past 25 years, and many people have ridden more than 100,000 kilometers with them without any problems. The hub is suitable for both a chain drive and the low-maintenance Gates Belt Drive.

14 REALLY USEFUL GEARS

A derailleur system has many overlapping gears, meaning a 3x10-speed derailleur system often only has 15 different gears. A derailleur also requires a lot of maintenance in wet or winter conditions.

A Rohloff hub has a 526% gear ratio, which is equivalent to a 3x9 derailleur system. A 526% gear ratio means the highest gear is 5.26 times heavier than the lowest gear. Jongerius also offers multiple gear ratios, giving you more choice between the lowest gears (for hilly riding) and the highest gears, depending on your needs.

With a Rohloff hub, the hub always makes more noise in gears 1 through 7. Gears 8 through 14 are always the quietest, with gear 11 being the most efficient (98%) because this is the direct drive. The noise the hub makes can also vary considerably between hubs and bicycles because the hubs are all handmade.

SHIFTING WITH THE ROHLOFF TWIST GEARSHIFTER

Shifting with the twist shifter can be done both while stationary and while riding, with even, small increments of 13.5% per increment. The major advantage over a derailleur is that you can shift even while stationary, allowing you to shift a whole set of increments simultaneously. Shifting is also much faster, and you don't have to worry about a misaligned chainline.

The 14 gear steps are located in the rear hub, which means a Rohloff hub always shifts slightly harder than, for example, a Shimano hub. This is also because Rohloff uses special cable ferrules with improved sealing, allowing this system to be used off-road (which is not permitted with Shimano hubs).

With the Gebla Rohbox, we replace the standard hub shifting unit, giving you the option of shifting with a Sram trigger thumb shifter on a hybrid or trekking handlebar. It's also possible (as with our GravL collection) to shift with Sram Duotap shifters on a road or gravel handlebar.

Instead of turning the twist shifter, you shift to a lighter gear with the left shifter and shift to a heavier gear with the right shifter.

CONVERT TO
ELECTRIC BIKE

A bicycle with a Rohloff hub is easy to convert to electric. You can choose to have the bicycle converted as an e-bike upon purchase, or you can do this later with our Pendix system.

The Pendix system places a direct-drive electric motor at the bottom bracket, allowing you to easily cycle without assistance. This is virtually impossible with other pure e-bikes due to the high internal resistance of an e-bike motor.

THE ROHLOFF HUB IS VERY MAINTENANCE REQUIRED
FRIENDLY

Because the hub is a kind of gearbox, it needs to be broken in after purchase. Breaking in a Rohloff hub takes between 1,000 and 2,000 kilometers. After breaking it in, the oil in the hub needs to be changed, and the hub will run smoothly.

After that, the Rohloff oil must be changed annually or every 5000 km (whichever comes first) be replaced. This is very important for maintaining the warranty*.

We recommend replacing the gear cables on Rohloffs every 20,000 km. A Rohloff hub can also sweat/leak a little, but this isn't harmful because the hub isn't 100% oil-tight. Of the 12.5 ml of oil in a Rohloff hub, only 6 ml is for lubrication, and the rest is for noise reduction. As long as you change the oil annually, this shouldn't cause any problems.

An important point to keep in mind is that you should never transport a bicycle with a Rohloff hub lying down. If you transport a Rohloff hub lying down, there's a risk of it leaking. This isn't immediately harmful because there's always sufficient oil left in the hub. However, make sure no oil gets on disc brakes or similar surfaces, as this will affect braking performance.

*The factory warranty on a Rohloff hub is 2 years, but Rohloff also offers an extensive goodwill policy (up to 10 years after purchase). It's important to note that this only applies to the first owner of the bike, and that an annual oil change has been performed.
